Diabetes Education

Diabetes is a serious disease that leaves most patients confused and frustrated. Diabetic patients find that the disease permeates every facet of their lives, affecting their body and mind, as well as those around them. Therefore, access to diabetes educators and diabetes education programs is an important factor determining how well patients and their caregivers are able to cope with the disease.

Diabetes education for patients becomes more important when the patient is a child or a teen under 20 years of age. Over 215,000 teenagers below the age of 20 in the US suffer from diabetes, mostly type 1. Adding to the numbers is rising teen and childhood obesity. There is lack of awareness and of the diabetes symptoms amongst parents. Most families remain oblivious to how susceptible their children are to diabetes, or what to do when their child is diagnosed with it.

For parents of children with diabetes, training and nursing needs go beyond administering insulin injections or checking blood glucose. It needs to involve:

1.       Explaining to the child what is happening to his/her body without scaring them.

2.       Monitoring and changing their diet appropriately

3.       Moderating their physical activities as recommended

4.       Ensuring they understand the importance of insulin shots as well as checking blood glucose levels regularly.

Most importantly though, diabetes education for children must ensure their mental peace and stability, so that they are able to live a normal childhood doing as many of the things as other children can, without endangering their lives. For these reasons, the Diabetic Support Program looks at providing a 360 degree solution when it comes to diabetes resources, education, training and support, specifically tailored for each individual patient to help families cope successfully.
